A recent scientific discovery claims that whales capture tons of carbon from the atmosphere, an environmental service with a global value of $ 1 trillion.
This study published by the IMF reveals that protecting whales adds a monetary incentive, since their ability to sequester human-produced carbon emissions is an important natural solution to climate change.
“Our conservative estimates put the value of an average large whale, based on its various activities, at more than $ 2 million, and the current population of large whales at more than $ 1 billion,” say the authors of the report.
